About

We tell newcomers to CW to focus on learning to copy. I’ve always pinned an asterisk next to that advice, for Morse is a language, and a language must be spoken to truly understand it.

In 2024 I joined an online CW practice group and soon learned that sending directly from my head was not so easy. Moreover, there were daily issues with audio quality and malfunctioning keyers which ate up a lot of time. I decided to make my own standalone keyer as a weekend project, and gained a new respect for the subtlety of these devices. I continued to develop my keyer over many months out of a love for CW and, especially, an appreciation for good tools that work well.

Spacelight is slow technology. It won’t directly teach you how to send or copy Morse; instead, the goal is to broaden the way you practice. It doesn’t have a screen, and all the advanced controls are put into a cupboard to keep the basic operation as simple as possible. Yet I have designed it to satisfy the most advanced users, especially those who want to push CW to ever faster speeds.
